Elmer Knowles 1940 US Census
Prior to his death, I had the great joy of spending dozens of Monday's sitting with my great uncle Elmer Knowles as he discussed his life growing up with his brother, my grandfather. When you first saw Elmer, it was easy to be scared, he was a big man. Even though he was in a wheelchair, he was an imposing figure.
I always found him to be one of the most honest men I had ever talked to and one of the kindest also. He shared with me everything. A tear came to his eyes every time he talked about family.
All of this seemed so far away from what made him the man he was. At one point, bad decisions led him to serve time in the state prison. On the 1940 census he is listed as living there. The records above are of that census.

Eugene A. Knowles Sr. family on 1940 Census
With the 1940 census now available it is interesting to find those people who are very much still alive. The record at right is of my grandfather Eugene A. Knowles Sr. with his wife Pearl. Also listed are the first seven children. The head of the household is given as Frank Knowles who would be my great grandfather.
Below is the actual census as taken from www.familysearch.org.
