The Parentage of Sarah Rostirn
Like so many of the early members of the church, the family of Richard and Sarah Knowles were not of the Church of England, they were noncomformists.. One of the benefits of this to present day family members is the wonderful records they left behind. In the records of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England (FHL Film #560874) we find the record of the birth of one of the children of Richard and Sarah. On the record (shown above) it states that in the parish of Manchester, Alice the daughter of Richard Knowles and Sarah his wife, who was the daughter of James Rostron and Alice his wife was born on 1 May 1829. This now gives us that Sarah Rostron was the daughter of James and Alice Rostron.
Knowles Family Comes to America
On the 30th of July in 1845 the family of Richard and Sarah Knowles arrive in Boston, Massachusetts. Those on board the ship "Asia" included Richard, his wife Sarah Rostirn, daughter Caroline, son John and his wife Hannah Webb, and son Thomas and his wife Eliza Osborne.
This passenger list, while very helpful actually creates some interesting new questions. First, with the whole family sailing, why didn't daughter Sarah join them? and secondly, why did they sail on this ship when they could have sailed much cheaper on a ship with other members of the church coming to America? There is nothing to indicate they had a lot of money, so this must have been a large financial burden.

1841 English Census of Ancoats, Lancashire, England
In 1841, Richard Knowles and his wife Sarah were living on Grey Street in Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England. The ages may not be completed accurate as the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0. Therefore, Richard who is listed as being 50 could have been between the ages of 50 and 54. This dates would give him a birth year of between 1787 and 1791. Also on the census he answers no when asked if he was born inside the county.
